Part IV: Reply to the Arab Position

Dr. Noel Smith

Reprinted from the Baptist Bible Tribune, Nov. 29, 1957, From the Best of Noel Smith, by Norma Gilming. Used by Permission. This is the fourth of five articles.

This page last week was published the long, studiously worded, detailed letter of the late Mohammedan King Abdul Aziz Al Saul of Saudi, Arabia to the late president Roosevelt. In that letter, in violent language, the king told the president why the Arabs should be the masters of Palestine and why the Jews should be driven out.

From his harem more of than 100 wives and concubines the king produced a harvest of 36 sons, 40 daughters, and 100 grandsons. The veiled granddaughters were not considered enough importance for the record to take note of. The importance of women in the Mohammed world is illustrated by an incident that occurred at the Riyadh Airport. A reservation had been made for 20 persons to be picked up there and taken to the hill town of Taif. When the plane landed, the pilot saw 20 men and 20 women waiting to get on board. When the Saudi sheik was asked about the women, the reply was, “must we count them too?”

But back to the Kings letter.

In the first place, the king stubbornly ignored the starting point to the settling of the question of who owns Palestine. He did not so much as mention it. That starting point is Genesis 15:18.

In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Abraham’s covenant “seed” quote was to be through the line of Isaac: and God said:

Genesis 17:19 – “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.”

The land was given to Abraham and his seed [through the line of Isaac] as an everlasting possession:

Gen. 17:8 - And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

You can’t make anything plainer than that.

The Mohammed Arabs know all about these promises in Genesis. They know more about them than most American Christians know. The king of Saudi Arabia knew all about them when he wrote his letter to Pres. Roosevelt.

Then why did he ignore them? He ignored them because he knew, as everybody else knows, that these promises are valid, Palestine belongs forever to the descendants of Abraham, through the line of Isaac, and belongs to nobody else.

Here are the questions to be settled, before any other questions concerning the ownership of Palestine is to be considered:

1. Is the book of Genesis and authentic record?

2. Did Almighty God deed and convey to Abraham and his seed, to the line of Isaac, and for an everlasting possession, all the land between the Nile and Euphrates River?

3. Did Almighty God have the right to do it?

4. Has Almighty God ever revoked the deed and conveyance?

The answer to these questions is the starting point, I repeat, to the settling of the question of who are the rightful owners Palestine. The basic question is not the virtues claimed the Mohammed and Arabs or the vices charged against the Zionist Jews; not whether 46 million Arabs, owning a vast subcontinent of 3 million square miles on the Lake of oil, should tolerate less the number 2 million Jews confined to 8000 square miles² of territory with pitifully limited resources; not whether President Nassar of Egypt was right or wrong when he said on October 14, 1955: “The hatred of the Arabs is very strong, and there is no sense in talking about peace with Israel. There’s not even the smallest place for negotiations between the Arabs and Israel. There is not even the smallest place for negotiations between the Arabs and Israel”; not whether the Jews, or whether the irresponsible Arab leaders themselves, are responsible for the terrible Arab refugee problem –

These questions, as serious as they are, do not so much as touch the basic question. The first question is, “who owns the land?”

The Bible says that God deeded and conveyed it to Abraham and his seed, through the line of Isaac for an “everlasting” possession. The deed and conveyance has never been revoked. That settles the question of the ownership.

In his letter the Mohammed and King began with the Canaanites: “The earliest recorded history of Palestine begins with the year 3500 BC, it’s first inhabitants being Canaanites, an Arab tribe which emigrated from the Arab Peninsula and had its first abode in the low lands, hence the name Canaanites.”

The king then went on to deal with Joshua. “If we accept the text of the Bible we find that the conqueror of Palestine was Joshua, the son of nun, who crossed with his army and captured the city of Jericho from the Canaanites with great cruelty and barbarity: witness his words to his army: “Burn all that is in the city and slay with the edge of the sword both man and woman, young and old.” Joshua 7:21, 24.

This brings up the question of the Canaanites.

The Bible paints the Canaanites as the most degraded and vile people in their time. In the 18th chapter of Leviticus Israel is warned against the “doings of the land of Egypt wherein ye dwell… “and against the doings of the land of Canaan whether I bring you” (verse 3). And in verses 21 to 25 we read: “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. 22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. 23 - Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. 24 - Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 - And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.”

It is not to be wondered at that we should read the following concerning such an unimaginably vile and degraded people. “Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.” Deut. 9:4.

The Canaanites had forfeited the right to live in the land or in any other land.

And secular evidence has confirmed everything the Bible says about the utter and degradation of these people. Mr. Warner Keller in his highly readable and profitable book, “The Bible as History”, has summarized the evidence.

No less an authority than Prof. William Foxwell will Albright has confirmed the Bible’s indictment, and every detail of the indictment.

The head of the Canaanite gods was EL. He married three of his sisters. He was a bloody tyrant; he dethroned his father, murdered his favorite son, and decapitated his daughter. He was a character of wholesale lust. The Canaanites considered him the exalted “father of years,” “the father of man,” and “father bull.” He was so worshiped.

The son of EL was Baal. Baal’s wife was his sister, Anath. She was of course a goddess. There were two other goddesses.

Anath was a sacred prostitute. She was worshiped as “the holy One.” Prostitution, by both males and females, was a sacred, religious thing. The temples of the Canaanites were sacred brothels.

The Canaanites got no higher than the lustful, tyrannical gods and goddesses they worshiped. They didn’t desire to get any higher. Of course all of this is revolting. Of course we’d rather not mention it. But since the Mohammed King-and most of the world, including a large part of the Christian world – condemns God and justifies the Canaanites, it is time the loathsome character of these people was made generally known.

And while we were on this subject, no responsible man wonders that God destroyed the Canaanites, but wonders that he didn’t destroy them before he did, and wonders that he hasn’t destroyed a large part of the human race. There were the Carib Indians in the west Indies, for which the English word cannibal is derived. Great chunks of human flesh were all about them. They castrated little boys and fattened them to eat as hogs are fattened. They captured little girls and forced them to bear children because babies ranked high on the list of edible delicacies.

The Mohammed King didn’t say so, but Joshua did what he did at the express command of Almighty God. But if I have to choose between this Mohammed King and Almighty God, I will take God’s side.

The king then told President Roosevelt that the Arabs occupied Palestine in 637 A.D. and Arab rule lasted for 880 years.

By what right did the Arabs occupy Palestine in 637 A.D.? The King didn’t say.

Then said the King, “Palestine passed under the rule of the Turks and A.D. 1517… And their rule lasted 400 years.”

By what right did the Turks occupy Palestine and rule it for 400 years? The King didn’t say.

Why doesn’t Turkey have the same right to own and rule Palestine as the Mohammed King and his Mohammed and allies?

If the Arabs were the original inhabitants of Palestine, as the king contends, they were driven out by Almighty God because there vile character had forfeited their right to live in Palestine or anywhere else. What has happened from that date to this to constitute a valid claim for the Arabs to return to and possess that land?

Nothing has happened.

It is true that the Jews were driven out by God in the days of Nebuchadnezzar. They spent 70 years in Babylon as captives. And in 70 A.D. the Jews were driven out and scattered all over the world, where they are still scattered except for those that have return to Palestine. We all know that the Jews were driven out because of their sins.

But the fact that a man is sent by a court to the penitentiary does not give anybody the right to confiscate his property. Regardless of the prisoner’s crime, regardless of how long he remains in prison, his property, assuming a valid deed and conveyance, remains his property, and, when he dies, becomes the property of his heirs.

Palestine originally, as does all the earth belonged, to God. God deeded and conveyed it too Abraham and his seed, through the line of Isaac, for an everlasting possession – not only Palestine but all the territory between the Nile and Euphrates rivers

The deed and conveyance has never been revoked. The Jews going back to Palestine are not invaders; they are going back home.
