Who Owns Palestine?

Part VI: The Position of the Jews (Last of series) Baptist Bible Tribune,

Dec. 20, 1957

The last article closed with pointing out that the Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. David Ben Gurion, believes the God of the Bible to be a myth, does not accept the Old Testament as the Word of God, and blames Christianity, and very especially the Apostle Paul, for a great measure of the calamities that befell the Jews in the first century, which resulted in their being scattered throughout the earth, where they have been wanderers and strangers for 2000 years.

Mr. Ben Gurion’s position is the position of Zionism.  In addition to Mr. Ben Gurion’s book, “Rebirth and Destiny of Israel,” from which I quoted, there are two other authoritative Jewish books which reveal the attitude of Zionism toward God and the Old Testament: “Voice of Israel,” by Abba Eban (Horizon Press, N.Y., 1957, and “Israel and Her Neighbors,” N.Y., 1956.

At this time Mr. Eban is the Jewish Ambassador to the U.S. and head of his countries Permanent Delegation to the U.N.  He was born in South Africa in 1915 and was brought up in England.  He specialized in Oriental languages at Cambridge, was graduated with honors, and served on the faculty of Pembroke College, and Cambridge University, as an authority on Hebrew, Arabic and Persian literature.

A deeply educated and highly civilized man, Mr. Eban is unexcelled as a powerful, convincing, and effective expositor and advocate of the Jewish State.  His book, composed of addresses he has made in many places, ranks with the very greatest of contemporary apologetic literature.

In Mr. Eban’s brilliant book there is no real recognition of God and His plans for Israel.  There is one exception.  On page 155 he does say that “The ingathering of the Exiles in modern Israel also represents the most precise and tangible fulfillment of Prophecy available to all those in all Faiths who accept the literal truth of the Bible promises ‘and I will bring them out from the people and gather them from the countries and will bring them again into their own land and I will feed them upon the mountains of Israel, by the streams and in all the inhabitable places of the country’.” But it is the Hebrew “mind,” the Hebrew “spirit,” and the Hebrew “will”, according to Mr. Eban, that is really responsible for Hebrew progress.  Whether or not he intended it so, Mr. Eban’s book is far more enthusiastic about Mr. Truman and the late Chaim Wiszmann than it is about the God of Israel.

Mr. Elath is the Israeli Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s.  His book is composed of a series of lectures he delivered at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, in April-May 1956.  Mr. Elath does say that the Jews going to Palestine “are not invaders or intruders, but exiles returning home to the land of their Kings and their Prophets, a land whence they sprang, and where their forefathers lived and wrought before them” (page 41).

But then Mr. Ben Gurion believes that.

In none of these authoritative, eloquent and powerful books is there any real recognition of the God of Israel, or any reference to the covenant God made with Abraham.  And, most incredible of all, there is hardly any mention at all of sin and atonement.  All of that is completely ignored.

Zionism rejects the God of Israel, the God of the Prophets, the God of the land.  Zionism does not base its claim to Palestine on the covenant God made with Abraham.  Zionism refuses to admit that the dispersion of the Jews was an act of God because of the sin of the Jews in rejecting their own Messiah.  Zionism has no consciousness of sin and therefore feels no need of a personal Messiah to atone for sin.  Zionism is atheistic, secular, political.

And Zionism represents but a small percentage of the Jews of the world.  In the U.S. Zionism represents but some 500,000 Jews (1957) out of a population of 5 million.

And the bitterest opponents of Zionism are non-Zionist Jews.

And the bitterest opponents of Zionism are non-Zionist Jews.

Zionism, rejecting the God who gave Israel the Land, rejecting the grace which was responsible for the gift, has no valid claims to Palestine---none more than the Arabs.

There is a sense, of course, in which the hand of God is in Zionism----the sense in which His hand is in all history.  “Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.” (Ps 76:10).   The lot is cast into the lap; and the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord” (Prov. 16:33).

And the Star of David unfurled over that land, and the revival of the Hebrew language as the basic working tool, is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy.  Bible prophecy says that secular, atheistic Jews will make a deal with Antichrist (as Herzl tried to make with anybody at hand).  How could such a tremendous event occur except that in the meantime the secular, atheistic Jews are back in Palestine and in control of the government?

I do not at all agree with those who hold that Zionism is the fulfillment of those great and moving prophecies of the final regathering of Israel.  I do not at all agree with those who hold that no Bible prophecy is being fulfilled today.  I do not agree with those naïve people who hold that in this world everything is white.  I do not agree with those dejected people who hold that in this world everything is all black.  I do heartily agree with those who hold that everything is freckled.  Which means that we have to study, think, discriminate.  That’s hard work.

And nobody much, especially in religion, is dying of hard work. So much for Zionism.  What about the rest of the Jews?  They reject Christ.  And what does the Bible say about the absolute authority of Jesus Christ?

Heb 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2  For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3  Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Nobody can bypass the authority of Jesus Christ.  Mr. David Ben Gurion has the same obligation to humble himself before Jesus Christ and confess Him as Lord and Saviour that everybody else has.  And every Jew------Orthodox, Reformed, Nothing------has the same obligation as Mr. Ben Gurion.

What is happening in Palestine today is going to culminate in the Great Tribulation.

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.   And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.  (Mat 24:21 f.)

In the midst of that awful time of calamity there will be, there in Palestine, a remnant of Jews that will refuse to acknowledge Antichrist as God.  All the powers of hell will be let loose on this remnant.  There will be but one direction in which they will be able to look for help-----UP!

And He [Messiah] is going to hear and answer their prayer.  And pray as no Jews have ever prayed on this earth.

Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,” (Isa 64:1).                  And He [Messiah] is going to hear and answer that prayer.  He is going to rend the heavens, and He is going to come down, and the mountains are going to literally flow down at his presence.  “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory”  (Mat 24:30).

His feet will touch the Mount of Olives. “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”  Zec 14:4

And that remnant of course will see Him.  And they will see the wounds in His hands.  “And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.” Zec 13:6          Of course they will fall before Him.  What else could they do?  “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” Mat 24:31.

That will be the beginning of the great, world-wide gathering.

Eze 20:40  For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things. 41  I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen. 42   And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.  43  And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed. 44  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

And when all the tribes of scattered, distressed Israel are back into their own land, by the omnipotent hand of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and there become “one stick” (Ez 37:17), under one Shepherd, something truly wonderful is going to happen to the whole tormented earth and all its weary peoples.  Springtime’s sun will rise, the grip of all but endless winter will no more be afraid, the wild beast will become quiet, and no sparrow will again fall to the ground.  Peace---world-wide, universal---peace with no anxiety about tomorrow’s uncertainties. Yesterday’s failures will have been squared up, and there will no longer be any uncertainties.

It doesn’t make sense?  God in swaddling clothes doesn’t make sense either, does it?  And as to the rebellious Jew near you, can you be absolutely certain he won’t be one of those who will refuse to bow down to Antichrist?  Can you be absolutely certain that when the awful hour of the great and decisive test comes, he will not have more faith and courage than ever could be found on the whole of your family tree?

In view of guilt we all share, of bestowed grace none of us could buy, of deserved punishment we all have escaped, of the calamities that have befallen the people who gave us the Bible and its Christ, we ought to be humble, sympathetic and prayerful people in these strange, ominous, tremendous days in which we are living and dying.  And very especially so, until it can be decided who of us should cast the first stone.

There is universal agreement among the good and discriminating students of our country’s history that all that is noble, pure, kind and good in our national life came together in the lonely, sweet-spirited Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address on March 4, 1865, as only American kinsmen can fight among themselves.  “Both read the same Bible, pray to the same God: and each invokes His aid against the other . . . The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully.”

“.  . . so still it must be said ‘the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether’.”             And so, as for him---for whom the assassin’s pistol has already been loaded---         “With malice toward none; with charity for all . . .”

Who Owns Palestine?

Dr. Noel Smith

Part V: The Position of the Jews

Baptist Bible Tribune, Dec. 13, 1967

(Editor’s  note:  The reader should remember that the prophetic clock has moved forward fifty years since these articles were written.)

We are completely wrong  if we have the notion that the mass of Jews publicly recognize that Palestine was deeded to Abraham and his seed forever, to the line of Isaac; that they came into possession of the land through the grace of God; that the hand God is today in the great movement of Jews returning to Palestine; that the Jews now in Palestine recognize that God is responsible for their being back there; that they accept the Old Testament as the Word of God, and that they are looking for the appearance of the Messiah.

While there are individual and small group exceptions, the great majority of Jews, of whatever faction, believe no such thing. The plain truth of the matter is that the Jews have little more to do with the God of the Bible than do the Mohammed and Arabs.  Another plain truth is that the Jews----all factions--- are as violently opposed to Christianity as are the Mohammed and Arabs; and if there is any difference at all, they are more so.

Let’s examine the plane, pathetic record and see what it reveals.

First of all, there are the Zionist Jews. They are an international organization. The Zionists are responsible for the modern Israeli state. The Zionists equate with the state.

One of the earliest exponents of Zionism was Theodore Herzl, an Austrian Jew. He became a Zionist [or a nationalist] following the famous Dreyfus trial, which he attended as a correspondent of a Viennese paper.  Alarmed at the anti-Semitism surrounding the trial, he began to advocate a Jewish state which would absorb immigrants from all parts of the world.  At first Herzl attached no particular importance to the locality of the state.  Herzl founded the Zionist Congress, an international organization.  The Congress became, and is today, the tribunal of Jewish nationalism.

Later on, Herzl decided that Palestine, because of its sentimental and religious appeal, was the place. He was willing to get possession of the land by any means that would work. He tried to make a deal with Abdul Hamid, Sultan of Turkey and suzerain of Palestine, offering him Jewish wealth to pay off Turkish debts.  In a later effort with the same fellow, Herzl tried to convince him that the Jews were the natural allies of the Mohammedans against the Christians. He told the Turk that the Jews would use their influence to quiet down the anti-Turkish feeling which had been aroused all over the civilized world because of the horrible Armenian massacres but the Turk wouldn’t do business with him.

Herzl made gestures to the German Kaiser [“Kaiser Bill”].  He told the Kaiser that a Jewish Palestine would be an outpost of German culture, and that the Jews would aid the Kaiser in realizing his dream of a Berlin-Baghdad railway.  But the Kaiser at the time was courting the Mohammedans.

Herzl then tried the Russians Tsar, with no success. He then turned to the British. The colonial Secretary offered to colonize a tract of land in British East Africa, known today as Kenya.  Herzl was willing to accept it, but the Zionist Congress would settle for nothing but Palestine.

In the First World War, the Zionists used to do business with both the Turks and the Germans. They promised to recruit an army of Polish Jews to fight with Turkey. To the Germans, they would establish a cultural and commercial center which would be German.

Any kind of deal with anybody who would make it!

I emphasize that from the inception of Zionism the leaders have completely ignored God and completely disregarded the circumstances in which Abraham and his descendants became the perpetual owners of Palestine.

Zionist propaganda operates on the theory that the end justifies any means at hand, including character assassination.  In November 1946, the publisher of the New York Times, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, himself a Jew, said publicly:  ”I dislike the coercive methods of Zionists who in this country have not hesitated to use economic means to silence persons who have different views.  I object to the attempts at character assassination of those who do not agree with them.”

The Prime Minister of Israel is David Ben Gurion.  71 years old,  Mr. Ben Gurion as was Herbert Spencer, is largely a self-educated man.  He is one of the ablest, most resourceful statesmen in the world today.  He has a vast knowledge of history, and he has what few statesmen today have-- the historical mind.

In an article in, “Modern Prophet of Israel,” in the last November 18 issue of Life magazine, Robert Coughlan wrote that to Ben Gurion Jehovah is nothing more than a figure of mythology.  Mr. Ben Gurion believes that the Old Testament contains a good deal of authentic history, and he is said to keep a copy of it on his desk. He does not believe the Old Testament to be the Word of God. Like most contemporary evangelical theologians, Mr. Ben Gurion believes that the prophets were primarily historians who did the best they could.  He thinks they did, on the whole, extraordinarily well.

We have Mr. Ben Gurion’s own book, “rebirth and destiny of Israel.” In those 539 pages the Prime Minister is a silent as the Arabs on the covenant God made with Abraham. Presumably, that also is mythology.

But Mr. Ben Gurion is not silent on Christianity. Here his own words:

The longest and hardest trial came with the flourishing of Christianity. The culture of Egypt and Babylon, of Greece and Rome, was foreign to Judaism. Not so Christianity. It was born in the very bosom of Judaism, from within it, and out of it. The man to whom the new faith was accounted was a plain Jew living in the midst of his people. His religious and moral conceptions did not overstep his bounds of those accepted by the Jews of his time. Even the ideas to which Jesus gave special emphasis was not, in essence, different from the thinking usual among the sects which abounded in Israel before the destruction of the second Temple. As a Jew of his generation, Jesus refused to take the children’s bread and to cast it unto the dogs,’ and when the Canaanite woman cried out to him for help he answered her saying: ‘I’m not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’

The anti-Jewish bias was imparted to the new religion by Saul of Tarsus, the apostle, and  perhaps also the author, of the ‘New’ Testament in contradistinction to our Old.  Saul, son of a Roman citizen who lived abroad, was brought up as a Jew and was a pupil of Rabbi Gamaliel. Like the other pupils, he was a fanatical Pharisee, but he had traveled and taken in something of Greek culture.  At first, he was one of the spirited adversaries of the Christian sect in Jerusalem, but after he’d ‘seen the light’ was his way to Damascus and became one of the believers in Jesus as the son of God, a new direction was given it.  Unlike the disciples of Jesus and Palestine, who regarded themselves as Jews in every way, Saul of Tarsus, now named Paul, held that his mission was mainly to the Gentiles, and turned the sect into a religion and a church defying the fundamental principles of Judaism as a nation, a religion and an ideal.

At the moment when Jesus is quoted as saying: ‘Think not that I am come to destroy the law of the prophets. I am not come to destroy but to fulfill. For verily I say and do you--- till heaven and earth shall pass, what John tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled,’ at the selfsame moment Saul was striving with might and main to uproot the Torah and its commands, and to bring an end to Jewry as a national entity pursuing a better world.  Saul was perhaps the most potent assimilationist the Jewish people has ever had.  He denied the practical precepts which constitute the essence and foundation of Judaism and based all religion on faith alone.  He recognized only the individual and not the nation.  He tried to destroy the faith and hope of the Jewish people in national and territorial redemption. Rejecting the ultimate vision of the profits, which looks far into the future and there makes one the redemption of the nation and the whole world, the dignity of Israel and the kingdom of peace and justice on earth, Saul founded Christianity on faith and heavenly redemption through Messiah already come.

Christianity throve and spread when the last vestige of independence was lost to Israel. The fierce, despairing wars fought against its Roman tyrants, from the days of Yehuda the Galilean and Zadok to Shimon bar Kochba and Rabbi Akiva, ended in total defeat and loss of liberty.  It was a deep-seated spiritual and social shock, a political reverse the like whereof Israel had never before endured. The forsworn in gallant warriors had fallen in battle or were taken captive. The People’s freedom was shattered. The temple was burned down. Much of the land was laid waste. Jerusalem was blotted out and its name was changed. It seemed as if Judah had fallen never to rise again, that the Jewish people was dead to memory. There was left only the Jewish faith. That too had to undergo a gruesome ordeal. The Emperor Hadrian, conqueror of bar Kochba, banned the practice of circumcision, the observance of the Sabbath, and the teaching of the Torah in the schools. These prescriptions were enforced with vicious severity, and great men of Israel who imperiled their lives for the learning of the Torah, were put to death. Among them was Rabbi Akiva, vital spark in Bar Kochba’s uprising.

But the deadlier attack came from within, from the adherents of Christianity which sprang from the heart of Judaism. They had claimed at first that they put their faith in the prophets and in the beliefs, hope and ideas which had taken root in Judaism during the period of the Second Temple, especially the beliefs in the Messiah and in the resurrection. For a long time the first followers of Jesus behaved completely as Jews, fulfilling all commandments and canons. But they discarded the national hope of Israel, hope of a redemption destined yet to be. The attraction of a number of expatriate Jews, who had little knowledge of Judaism or connection with the Jewish people, the adoption of the new religion by the Greeks and other nations which had been idolaters, and the proselytizing work of soul accentuated the differences.

The Christian Jews did not take part in the national struggle against Rome. They were wont to inform the Roman authorities explicitly that they had no link or association with contumacious Jews. Saul bade his followers submit to the Roman authorities and accept their judgment. Jesus to is quoted as saying ‘Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s,’ but Saul went further. Every man, he preached in one of his epistles, must yield to his superior, for there is no authority that is not there by the will of God, every authority that exists was by God appointed, and whosoever rebels against the appointed rulers rebels against the word of God. Part III:  The Position of the Arabs

Dr. Noel Smith

Reprinted from the Baptist Bible Tribune, Oct. 4, 1957

from The Best of Noel Smith by Norma Gilming. Used by Permission.

This is the third of five articles.

King of Saudi ArabiaWe have in a single authoritative document the position of the Arab world toward the question, "Who Owns Palestine." This document is the clear, comprehensive, detailed letter the late King Abdul Aziz bin Rahman al Feisal Al Saud of Saudi Arabia (father of the present king - 1945), addressed to the late President Roosevelt on March 10, 1945. It should not be necessary to say that presumably no possible argument favorable to the Arab position was omitted from the letter.

Here is the complete text of the letter as it was released by the White House at the time:

March 10, 1945

From Abdul Aziz bin Abdur Rahman al Feisal Al Saud to His Excellency, Mr. Roosevelt, President of the United States of America.

Your Excellency,

This is indeed a happy occasion  for us to join with you in rejoicing at the triumph of those principles in defense of which was declared and to remind those great personalities in whose hands, after God, the fate of the world order rests, of a right which has existed unquestioned since the dawn of history.

This right men now seem to destroy by injustice unparalleled and unequalled in history. Such is the right of the Arabs in Palestine which the spokesmen of Jewish Zionism wish to scorn and abolish by the use of various forms of lying propaganda, invented, concealed and employed by them throughout the world.

They have acted unjustly and are making hostile preparations against the Arabs, some of which are known, although much remains undetected. They are preparing a form of Nazi-Fascism within sight and hearing of the democracies as well as in their heart and in the heart of the East which has proved itself loyal to the Allied cause in these critical times.

Right to Homeland

All people have the natural right to live in their homeland, a right guaranteed to them by natural law established by the principles of humanity which the Allies have proclaimed in the Atlantic Charter and on numerous other occasions.

The Arabs have a natural right in Palestine which needs no explanation. We have on a separate occasion mentioned to Your Excellency, as we have many times to the British Government, that the Arabs have inhabited Palestine since the beginning of history and that they have throughout the ages been its masters and enjoyed an overwhelming numerical superiority.

We would now make a brief reference to Palestine's history, ancient and modern, up to the present day, to make it clear that Zionist claims in Palestine are not based on historical facts.

The earliest recorded history of Palestine begins in the year 3500 B.C., its first inhabitants being the Canaanites, an Arab tribe which emigrated from the Arab peninsula and had its first abode in the lowlands, hence the name Canaanites. In 2000 B.C., a section of the Jews under the leadership of the Prophet Abraham, emigrated from Iraq (Ur of the Chaldees), settled in Palestine and then immigrated because of famine into Egypt where they were delivered into bondage by the Pharaohs.

The Jews remained scattered there until their delivery from exile by the Prophet Moses, who brought them back to the land of Canaan by the southeastern route, either in the time of Rameses II i.e. 1250 B.C. or his son Munfitah, 1225 B.C.

Bible Text is Cited

If we accept the text of the Bible we find that the conqueror of Palestine was Joshua, the son of Nun, who crossed with his Army and captured the city of Jericho from the Canaanites with great cruelty and barbarity: witness his words to his Army;

"Burn ye all that is in the city and slay with the edge of the sword both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep, and burn the city with fire and all that is therein." Joshua Ch.7 vs 12-24.

Thereafter the Jews split into two kingdoms; one, the Kingdom of the Israelites with its capital Samaria (Nablus), lasted 250 years and then fell into the hands of Shalmaneser, King of the Assyrians, in the year 722 B.C., and was led into captivity. The other, the Kingdom of Judah, with its capital Jerusalem, lasted 130 years after the Kingdom of Israel had perished.

It was later destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, who burned down the city and the temple with fire, and led the people into captivity to Babylon in the year 580 B.C.

The captivity in Babylon lasted seventy years, and then the Jews returned to Palestine by order of Cyrus, King of the Persians.

The Greek conquest followed in 332 B.C., under the command of Alexander the Macedonian, their rule continuing in Palestine for a period of 272 years.

The Roman conquest took place next in the year 63 B.C., under the command of Pompey, their rule lasting in Palestine for 700 years.

In the year 637 A.D. the Arabs occupied Palestine, and their rule lasted continuously for 880 years.

The orders of the Caliph to the conqueror were: "You shall not act treacherously, dishonestly, commit any excess or mutilation, kill any child or old man; cut or burn down palms or fruit trees, kill any sheep, cow or camel, and shall leave alone those whom you find devoting themselves to worship in their cells." This was related by Ibn-al-Atheer, the famous historian.

Palestine then passed under the rule of the Turks in A.D. 1517, during the reign of Sultan Saleem the First, and their rule lasted 400 years. The Arabs were the inhabitants and participated with the Turks in the government and administration of the country. It was then occupied by the British who are still there.

Arabs First Inhabitants

This history of Palestine, an Arab country, shows that the Arabs were its first inhabitants and that they dwelt there for a period of 3,500 years before Christ, and have remained there since Christ to the present day.

They ruled it alone or with the Turks for a period of about 1,300 years, whereas the disjointed reign of the Jews did not exceed 380 confused and sporadic years.

No Jewish rule has existed in Palestine since 332 B.C. not until the British forces entered Palestine in 1918, i.e., for 2,000 years there have been few Jews there and they have had no influence.  They numbered not more than 80,000 when the British entered Palestine and lived comfortably, happily and prosperously in that country with the original inhabitants, the Arabs.

The Jews were merely aliens who had come to Palestine at intervals and had then been turned out over 2,000 years ago.

The permanent rights of the Arabs in Palestine rest of the following:

 (1) The right to dwell there. This they have done since the year 3,500 B.C. without ever leaving the country.

 (2) The natural right to life.

 (3) The existence therein of the Holy Land.

 (4) The Arabs are not aliens in Palestine, and there is no intention to bring any of them from other parts of the world to settle there.

The historical claim of the Jews is, however, a fallacy. As already mentioned, their brief and sporadic rule gives them no right to claim that they own the country, for them to occupy a country and then leave it entitles no nation to claim and demand ownership thereof. The history of the world is full of such examples.

World Problem Indicated

The solution of the problem of the persecuted Jews in the world differs from the fictitious problem of Zionism. For to provide homes for the scattered Jews is something in which the whole world can cooperate, and here Palestine has borne more than its full share. But to bring these scattered people, put them in countries already occupied and do away with the original inhabitants is an act unparalleled in human history.

We state frankly and plainly that to help Zionism in Palestine not only means to endanger Palestine but all neighboring countries.

The Zionists have given clear evidence of their intentions in Palestine and in all neighboring countries. They have organized secret military formations. It would be thus a mistake to say that this was the action of a group of their extremists and that it had met with the disapproval of their assemblies and committees.

We declare that the actions of the Zionists inside and outside Palestine are based on a program agreed upon and approved of by world Jewry.

These people began their vile work by wronging the Government that has treated them kindly and sheltered them, namely, the British Government. Their assemblies declared war on Britain and organized dangerous military formations, which at present hold in Palestine all the arms and military equipment they require.

Their members have carried out various attacks of which the most shocking was the attack on that outstanding figure, so kind and charitable toward all men and with the greatest sympathy for persecuted Jewry, Lord Moyne.

Lays Terror to All Jews

The proof that all Jews aided and abetted their vile deed is to be seen in the demonstrations and efforts made by Jews everywhere, demanding a light sentence for the criminals in order to encourage others to do the same.

This, then, is the way they behave with the government which has treated them so kindly. What would be the position if they were able to realize their objects and made Palestine entirely their own country, in which and near which they could do as they pleased.

If the matter were left to the Arabs and these aggressors it might perhaps be easy, but they are protected by the British Government, the friends of the Arabs. The Zionists did not respect the sanctity of this protection but plotted mischief, beginning first with Britain and threatening the Arabs after Britain with similar and more dangerous plots.

Main Causes of Dissension

Thus if the allied governments, whose friendship the Arabs are aware of, wish to see the fires of war break out and bloodshed between Arabs and Jews, their support of the Zionists will surely lead to this result. What we and the Arab countries fear from the Zionists are:

(1)  That they will carry out a series of massacres as between themselves and the Arabs.

(2) That the Zionists will be one of the main causes of dissention between the Arabs and the Allies. The latest proof of this is the case of the two Jews who killed Lord Moyne in Egypt. Had the Jews been able to hide the criminals, a dispute would have occurred between the British Government and Egypt.

(3) That the ambitions of the Jews are not confined to Palestine alone. The preparations they have made show that they intend to take hostile action against neighboring Arab countries.

 (4) Supposing that the Jews obtain their independence somewhere in Palestine, what is to prevent them from coming to an agreement with any power that may be hostile to the Allies and to the Arabs? As it is, they have begun taking hostile action against Britain while under her protection and mercy.

Such factors should no doubt be taken into consideration in regard to the establishment of peace in the world when the problem of Palestine is discussed. Not only is the gathering of Jews in Palestine not based on an historical agreement nor on any natural right, and is in fact absolutely unjust, but it constitutes at the same time a danger to peace, to the Arabs and to the Middle East.

The crux of the matter is that the formation of a Jewish State in Palestine will be a deadly blow to the Arabs and a constant threat to peace, for disturbed conditions are bound to prevail between the Jews and the Arabs, and if the patience of the latter is one day exhausted and they despair of their future then they will be obliged to defend themselves and future generations against this aggression. No doubt the Allies, who are working to uphold peace and respect for men's rights, are aware of this. We have no doubt that they are dissatisfied with this uneasy situation which threatens peace in the Middle East.

Could Wait No Longer

We did not wish to bother Your Excellency or your Ministers with this matter during the present titanic struggle in which you are engaged. Confident that the Allies will treat the Arabs fairly, however, we would have preferred the Arabs to forbear until the end of the war had it not been for the provocative and offensive acts committed by the Zionists who, regardless of war conditions and the preoccupation of the Allies, seek to bring every form of pressure to bear on them to adopt a policy which is inconsistent with the principles of right and justice which the Allies have proclaimed.

That is why we wished to explain the true rights of the Arabs in Palestine so as to refute the flimsy arguments of the Zionist party, counter their aggressive tactics, and set out the facts in order that the Allies may fully understand the rights of the Arabs in their country, the country of their fathers and forefathers.

The Jews should not be permitted to exploit the forbearance of the Arabs or their desire to avoid any embarrassment to the Allies, to obtain concession to which they are not entitled.

All we ask is that the Allies should fully realize the rights of the Arabs and for the present prevent the Jews going ahead in any new matter which may be considered a threat to the Arabs and to the future of every Arab nation, in order that they, the Arabs, may be assured of justice and equity in their lands.

With highest respects,

Your friend,

Who Owns Palestine?

Dr. Noel Smith
Reprinted from the Baptist Bible Tribune, Oct. 4, 1957 from The Best of Noel Smith by Norma Gilming. Used by Permission.

This is the first of five articles.

So far as the Bible is concerned, there never has been and there is not today any semblance of doubt as to the rightful claimants to Palestine. On no question is the Bible's language clearer, more exact or precise. Here is what it says:

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD. Genesis 13:14-18

And in the fifteenth chapter we read this: In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Genesis 15:18

And in Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua, as follows:

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When Ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest: And he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. Leviticus 23:9-11.

Leviticus 25:23 - The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.

Numbers 32:7-9 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them? Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land. For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

Deuteronomy 1:8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

Joshua 21:43 And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which, he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

The territory conveyed and deeded to Abraham and his seed "for ever' not only embraces the 12,000 square miles universally recognized as The Holy Land (the State of Israel currently occupies 8,000 square miles), it embraces all the territory between the Nile and Euphrates Rivers that is 300,000 square miles – twelve and a half times as great as Great Britain and Ireland.

God owns all the earth. But He owns that territory in a unique sense. Every foot of that land is holy land. The fact that the descendants of Abraham have never possessed any considerable portion of it, except in the days of Solomon, doesn't alter a word in the deed. The King of the Jews has never a day sat on the Throne of David; but the Throne belongs to Him. He shall be great, and shall be called the son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:32,33).

This territory was conveyed and deeded to Abraham and his seed "for ever" through the line of Isaac.

Genesis 21:12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

Genesis 26:23, 24 And he went up from thence to Beersheba. And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Whether or not anybody likes it, God has not revealed Himself as the God of Abraham, Ishmael, and Esau. He has not revealed Himself as the God of the Romans, the British, and the Americans. He has revealed Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Ishmael, like all of us Americans, was a child of natural law. But Isaac – unlike Ishmael, and unlike we Americans – was not a child of natural law; he was a child of promise and pure grace. The grace of God, not natural law, produced Isaac.

That's one reason he has never been so popular with many of us. We are not too enthusiastic about anything we don't have a hand in.

And that territory is the only piece of this earth that its Owner has ever conveyed and deeded to anybody. You may be able to trace the deed to your property to the land grants of the English kings; and you may be able to go on beyond them, clear to Adam. But when you get to Adam you will come to a dead-end street; who gave Adam authority to deed a piece of this earth to anybody? (But, things being as they are, if I could get back to the English kings, I wouldn't lose too much sleep on the uncertainties that might lie beyond.)

The earth is the Lord's. The fact that a hijacker doesn't concede the rightful ownership of his stolen booty doesn't invalidate the owner's title and claim to it. Later on, a court's opinion may be at variance with that of the hijacker.

Neither Arab, Jew, or most Christians, will concede that this earth belongs to God – except when they are preaching.

But their opinion is at variance with that of the Almighty. And history has proved that it is not in the best interests of men for their opinions to be at variance with those of God. God has a variety of ways of validating His claims to His property; and often those ways are not pleasant and peaceful - as events in the Middle East are showing today.

The quarrel over the ownership of this territory is not with the Jews, the United Nations, or an international committee; the quarrel is with God. Is He the rightful owner of the earth? Does He have the right to convey and dispose of it as He wills? Has He conveyed and deeded to Abraham and his seed "for ever" the territory lying between the Nile and Euphrates Rivers?

If a judge who seriously believed in the God of the Bible, and in the authority of the Bible, were hearing this case on the rightful claimants to this territory, he would tell counsel that the questions above were the core of the case and that he wanted to hear arguments on them alone.

One of the ablest, most resourceful, energetic and formidable adversaries of the Jewish state is Mr. Alfred M. Lilienthal, a Jew who has become a Universalist. Mr. Lilienthal is as unbiased as any man who has his picture taken with King Saud at Washington, with his Majesty all but embracing him; and with President Gamal Abdel Nasser in Cairo, with his excellency looking as delighted as if one of Ben Gurion's ships had suddenly ben sent to the bottom of the Mediterranean.

Alfred M. Lilienthal

On Saturday, Jan. 9, 1954, his Majesty addressed at his royal palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a visiting press delegation from Jordan. He told his visitors that the Arab Nations should sacrifice up to 10 millions of the 50 million people, if necessary, to wipe out Israel. "Why don't we sacrifice 10 million of our number to live in pride and self-respect?" And he said, "Israel to the Arab world is like a cancer to the human body and the only way of remedy is to uproot it just like a cancer." (As reported by the AP in the Greensboro (N.C.) Daily News, Jan. 10, 1954)

Before Mr. Lilienthal wrote the book mentioned, he wrote another one: What Price Israel (Henry Regenery Co., Chicago, 1953). With most that he says about the arrogant political Zionists and their methods of coercion and duress I am in agreement. With his silence on Mohammedan plunder, rape and murder, I am not in agreement.

But I will give Mr. Lilienthal credit for one thing: He recognizes – as most don't – that you can't discuss this question of Palestine without taking the Bible into account. On page 1 of his second book he says this:

The father of the new state of Israel lies in an unknown grave. For without the anonymous poet who wrote the 137th Psalm there would be no "Jewish State" today.

Lurking behind that exaggeration is the accusation that the Bible must shoulder a great guilt.

On Pg. 67 of his book, Mr. Lilienthal says that "biblical sentimentality," was one of the factors in the thinking of Earl Balfour, General Smuts and others who interested themselves in the return of the Jews to Palestine.

But with "biblical sentimentality," the "anonymous poet," a foggy Moses, two Isaiahs, and everything else he could pick up in the Modernist lumberyard, Mr. Lilenthal is unable to impeach the Bible's testimony as to the rightful claimants to Palestine. It stands there.

Part IV: Reply to the Arab Position

Dr. Noel Smith

Reprinted from the Baptist Bible Tribune, Nov. 29, 1957, From the Best of Noel Smith, by Norma Gilming. Used by Permission. This is the fourth of five articles.

This page last week was published the long, studiously worded, detailed letter of the late Mohammedan King Abdul Aziz Al Saul of Saudi, Arabia to the late president Roosevelt. In that letter, in violent language, the king told the president why the Arabs should be the masters of Palestine and why the Jews should be driven out.

From his harem more of than 100 wives and concubines the king produced a harvest of 36 sons, 40 daughters, and 100 grandsons. The veiled granddaughters were not considered enough importance for the record to take note of. The importance of women in the Mohammed world is illustrated by an incident that occurred at the Riyadh Airport. A reservation had been made for 20 persons to be picked up there and taken to the hill town of Taif. When the plane landed, the pilot saw 20 men and 20 women waiting to get on board. When the Saudi sheik was asked about the women, the reply was, “must we count them too?”

But back to the Kings letter.

In the first place, the king stubbornly ignored the starting point to the settling of the question of who owns Palestine. He did not so much as mention it. That starting point is Genesis 15:18.

In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Abraham’s covenant “seed” quote was to be through the line of Isaac: and God said:

Genesis 17:19 – “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.”

The land was given to Abraham and his seed [through the line of Isaac] as an everlasting possession:

Gen. 17:8 - And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

You can’t make anything plainer than that.

The Mohammed Arabs know all about these promises in Genesis. They know more about them than most American Christians know. The king of Saudi Arabia knew all about them when he wrote his letter to Pres. Roosevelt.

Then why did he ignore them? He ignored them because he knew, as everybody else knows, that these promises are valid, Palestine belongs forever to the descendants of Abraham, through the line of Isaac, and belongs to nobody else.

Here are the questions to be settled, before any other questions concerning the ownership of Palestine is to be considered:

1. Is the book of Genesis and authentic record?

2. Did Almighty God deed and convey to Abraham and his seed, to the line of Isaac, and for an everlasting possession, all the land between the Nile and Euphrates River?

3. Did Almighty God have the right to do it?

4. Has Almighty God ever revoked the deed and conveyance?

The answer to these questions is the starting point, I repeat, to the settling of the question of who are the rightful owners Palestine. The basic question is not the virtues claimed the Mohammed and Arabs or the vices charged against the Zionist Jews; not whether 46 million Arabs, owning a vast subcontinent of 3 million square miles on the Lake of oil, should tolerate less the number 2 million Jews confined to 8000 square miles² of territory with pitifully limited resources; not whether President Nassar of Egypt was right or wrong when he said on October 14, 1955: “The hatred of the Arabs is very strong, and there is no sense in talking about peace with Israel. There’s not even the smallest place for negotiations between the Arabs and Israel. There is not even the smallest place for negotiations between the Arabs and Israel”; not whether the Jews, or whether the irresponsible Arab leaders themselves, are responsible for the terrible Arab refugee problem –

These questions, as serious as they are, do not so much as touch the basic question. The first question is, “who owns the land?”

The Bible says that God deeded and conveyed it to Abraham and his seed, through the line of Isaac for an “everlasting” possession. The deed and conveyance has never been revoked. That settles the question of the ownership.

In his letter the Mohammed and King began with the Canaanites: “The earliest recorded history of Palestine begins with the year 3500 BC, it’s first inhabitants being Canaanites, an Arab tribe which emigrated from the Arab Peninsula and had its first abode in the low lands, hence the name Canaanites.”

The king then went on to deal with Joshua. “If we accept the text of the Bible we find that the conqueror of Palestine was Joshua, the son of nun, who crossed with his army and captured the city of Jericho from the Canaanites with great cruelty and barbarity: witness his words to his army: “Burn all that is in the city and slay with the edge of the sword both man and woman, young and old.” Joshua 7:21, 24.

This brings up the question of the Canaanites.

The Bible paints the Canaanites as the most degraded and vile people in their time. In the 18th chapter of Leviticus Israel is warned against the “doings of the land of Egypt wherein ye dwell… “and against the doings of the land of Canaan whether I bring you” (verse 3). And in verses 21 to 25 we read: “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. 22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. 23 - Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. 24 - Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 - And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.”

It is not to be wondered at that we should read the following concerning such an unimaginably vile and degraded people. “Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.” Deut. 9:4.

The Canaanites had forfeited the right to live in the land or in any other land.

And secular evidence has confirmed everything the Bible says about the utter and degradation of these people. Mr. Warner Keller in his highly readable and profitable book, “The Bible as History”, has summarized the evidence.

No less an authority than Prof. William Foxwell will Albright has confirmed the Bible’s indictment, and every detail of the indictment.

The head of the Canaanite gods was EL. He married three of his sisters. He was a bloody tyrant; he dethroned his father, murdered his favorite son, and decapitated his daughter. He was a character of wholesale lust. The Canaanites considered him the exalted “father of years,” “the father of man,” and “father bull.” He was so worshiped.

The son of EL was Baal. Baal’s wife was his sister, Anath. She was of course a goddess. There were two other goddesses.

Anath was a sacred prostitute. She was worshiped as “the holy One.” Prostitution, by both males and females, was a sacred, religious thing. The temples of the Canaanites were sacred brothels.

The Canaanites got no higher than the lustful, tyrannical gods and goddesses they worshiped. They didn’t desire to get any higher. Of course all of this is revolting. Of course we’d rather not mention it. But since the Mohammed King-and most of the world, including a large part of the Christian world – condemns God and justifies the Canaanites, it is time the loathsome character of these people was made generally known.

And while we were on this subject, no responsible man wonders that God destroyed the Canaanites, but wonders that he didn’t destroy them before he did, and wonders that he hasn’t destroyed a large part of the human race. There were the Carib Indians in the west Indies, for which the English word cannibal is derived. Great chunks of human flesh were all about them. They castrated little boys and fattened them to eat as hogs are fattened. They captured little girls and forced them to bear children because babies ranked high on the list of edible delicacies.

The Mohammed King didn’t say so, but Joshua did what he did at the express command of Almighty God. But if I have to choose between this Mohammed King and Almighty God, I will take God’s side.

The king then told President Roosevelt that the Arabs occupied Palestine in 637 A.D. and Arab rule lasted for 880 years.

By what right did the Arabs occupy Palestine in 637 A.D.? The King didn’t say.

Then said the King, “Palestine passed under the rule of the Turks and A.D. 1517… And their rule lasted 400 years.”

By what right did the Turks occupy Palestine and rule it for 400 years? The King didn’t say.

Why doesn’t Turkey have the same right to own and rule Palestine as the Mohammed King and his Mohammed and allies?

If the Arabs were the original inhabitants of Palestine, as the king contends, they were driven out by Almighty God because there vile character had forfeited their right to live in Palestine or anywhere else. What has happened from that date to this to constitute a valid claim for the Arabs to return to and possess that land?

Nothing has happened.

It is true that the Jews were driven out by God in the days of Nebuchadnezzar. They spent 70 years in Babylon as captives. And in 70 A.D. the Jews were driven out and scattered all over the world, where they are still scattered except for those that have return to Palestine. We all know that the Jews were driven out because of their sins.

But the fact that a man is sent by a court to the penitentiary does not give anybody the right to confiscate his property. Regardless of the prisoner’s crime, regardless of how long he remains in prison, his property, assuming a valid deed and conveyance, remains his property, and, when he dies, becomes the property of his heirs.

Palestine originally, as does all the earth belonged, to God. God deeded and conveyed it too Abraham and his seed, through the line of Isaac, for an everlasting possession – not only Palestine but all the territory between the Nile and Euphrates rivers

The deed and conveyance has never been revoked. The Jews going back to Palestine are not invaders; they are going back home.
